Privacy
Last revised: 26 August 2026.
This policy describes how Communio (“Communio,” “we,” “us,” or “our”) collects, uses, and shares personal data when you use communio.cc and the services we operate there (the “Site”).
These words are adapted from the CC0 General Legal privacy template. Counsel has not yet reviewed them. They describe what Communio does now. If they conflict with what the product does, the product as you use it is the more accurate account until counsel blesses a later version.
The operator named in this policy is Communio. Rights requests and questions go to hello@communio.cc. We have not published a postal address or a governing-law state in this version.
Who we are
Communio is a place to find Catholic sites, read writing people publish, and look at stills. Search, the Garden, Ecclesia, and Lumen are public. You do not need an account to read them. Creating is Studio. Correspondence is Chat. Gatherings live at Seen, a separate service at seenapp.place.
We do not sell advertising. Ranking is not for sale. We do not score faith. We do not keep comments, likes, or follower counts.
Personal data we collect
We collect only what the product needs.
Public use. You can search and read without an account. Search queries are not a profile. We do not build an identity from what you look up.
Account. If you make an account, we store an email address, a password hash, a name, and an optional avatar. An account is made by an adult, or by a parent or guardian. Default private. Signed-in privacy controls live on the account at `/me/privacy`.
What you make. Writing you save in Studio, stills you save, and Chat you send. Published writing appears on Ecclesia. Published stills appear on Lumen. A presence can hold both. Chat is correspondence between two people.
Garden listings. A Garden listing is a public address: a name, a place, a line about who they are, and a link to their site. A listing is not a partnership, an endorsement, or a contract.
Cookies. We use a session cookie to keep you signed in, a locale cookie so the Site can remember English, Spanish, or Portuguese, and Vercel Analytics. See Cookies. We do not use advertising cookies.
We do not collect. Billing or payment data. Financial account numbers. Government identity documents. Precise geolocation. Social login. Advertising profiles. Promotions or sweepstakes data. We do not run ads on the Site.
How we use personal data
We use personal data to:
- operate Search, the Garden, Ecclesia, Lumen, Studio, and Chat
- keep you signed in, and remember the language you chose
- publish what you ask us to publish
- send Chat between the two people in a thread
- curate Garden listings
- understand how the Site is used, in aggregate, through Vercel Analytics
- answer letters sent to hello@communio.cc
- keep the Site secure, and to comply with law when we must
We do not sell personal data. We do not share it for advertising. We do not use it to score faith.
Legal bases (EEA, UK, and similar laws)
Where those laws apply, we rely on:
- Contract, when we need the data to provide an account, Studio, or Chat
- Legitimate interests, to operate a public Site, to curate the Garden, to keep the Site secure, and to understand use in aggregate
- Consent, where a law requires it for a cookie that is not essential. Vercel Analytics is typically treated as non-essential in the EEA. This version of the Site discloses that use. A consent banner is not yet in place. That is the next legal step, not this one
- Legal obligation, when the law requires us to keep or disclose a record
How we share
We share personal data with:
- MongoDB, which stores accounts, Studio writing, stills, Chat, and related records
- Vercel, which hosts the Site and provides Analytics
- Seen, only in the sense that we link to seenapp.place. A Communio account does not open Seen. Seen keeps its own records and its own terms. Gatherings are not hosted here
- You, when you publish. A published piece, a published still, and a Garden listing are public
- The other person in a Chat thread, for the messages in that thread
- Authorities, if the law requires it
We do not sell a list. We do not share data with advertisers.
Retention
We keep account records while the account is open. We keep published writing and stills while they remain published. We keep Chat while the thread remains. We keep Garden listings while they remain in the Garden. Session cookies last thirty days. The locale cookie lasts one year.
You can deactivate an account from the account. Seen keeps its own records if you also have a Seen account.
International transfers
The Site is used in the United States and in Latin America, and it may be used elsewhere. Records live with MongoDB and Vercel. If you use the Site from the EEA or the UK, your data may be processed in the United States. We rely on the safeguards those processors provide. Counsel has not yet named a transfer mechanism in this version.
Security
We use email and password. Passwords are stored as hashes. Session cookies are httpOnly. We do not claim that any system is beyond harm. If something is wrong, write to hello@communio.cc from the email on the account.
Your rights
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to access, correct, delete, or receive a copy of personal data we hold, to object to or restrict certain processing, and to withdraw consent where we rely on it. You may also have the right to lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority.
We do not sell personal data. Nevada, California, and other U.S. state privacy laws that speak of a “sale” should be read in that light.
To exercise a right, write to hello@communio.cc. We will ask enough to be sure it is you. Signed-in controls for the account itself live at the account.
Children
Search, the Garden, Ecclesia, and Lumen do not require an account or an age. An account is made by an adult, or by a parent or guardian. We do not put an age line on public pages.
Seen is a separate service, and it is 18. It keeps its own rules. A Communio account does not open Seen.
Cookies
The cookies we use, and the choice you have, are described in the Cookie Notice.
Changes
We may update this policy. The date at the top will change. If a change is material and we have an email on file, we may write. Continued use of the Site after a revision means you have read the new words.
